The greatest things to do in Barcelona

clock July 22, 2010 12:37 by author david_admin

The Sagrada Familia

We don’t have to remind you how beautiful and well-known Gaudi’s work is. Initiated in 1882, and nature themed, this cathedral is still to this day in construction. You will be able to visit it for 10€. It opens at 9 am and closes at 2 pm.

Montjuïc Hill

This vast park possesses many touristic places and activities, some of these including the castle, the Olympic stadium, the old Spanish village (that you can visit for 6- 9 euros), Miro’s foundation, the Greek theatre and many others. This is a nice hill pleasant for long strolls under a fresh marine wind during a hot summer´s day.

The Ramblas

Barcelona’s Champs Elysées, this avenue is a central place for touristic shops. The statues (human disguised) most definitely animate this street situated close to the Gothic areas.

The “Paseo de Gracia”

Take a walk down this road where, in the olden times, rich and famous Spanish people went to walk at the weekend to boast. It is now still a famous passage where you will be able to find the Pedrera House (entry costs 11 Euros), the Battló house (between 15 and 18 Euros for a visit) and various luxury shops such as Chanel, Burberry, Yves Saint Laurent…

The Picasso museum

Although much of his work is kept for private collections, this museum displays numerous paintings of this famous painter. Located in calle Montcada, between Jaume I and Arc de Triumf metro stations, this museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am till 8 pm.

The Gothic area

It is a small pedestrian area and this part of Barcelona is very typical and home to many small bars, and restaurants. There you will find Barcelona´s cathedral and the Pie’s church which possesses the largest European rosette.

The park Güell

Known worldwide, this park was created by the famous Barcelonese architect Gaudí. Initially built as a luxury park which would have regrouped beautiful properties, it was finally turned into a gorgeous park where you can admire Gaudi’s work (mosaic sculptures, aqueducts…).You will be able to visit the Gaudí museum located in the park Güell. The entry is free; it opens at 10 am and closes at 9 pm.

The Spanish village

Testimonial of the architectural history from all Spanish regions, this small village located in Montjuïc Park, near the national museum of Catalan Art, was built in 1929, for the international exposition. It opens Monday to Sunday, from 10 am till 6 pm.

The National Museum of Catalan Art

You can get to thismuseum via the Montjuïc Park or the “plaza de España”. Its slogan, which resumes the entire museum, is “one museum, 1000 years of art”. Come to admire paintings and sculptures by the best Catalan artists. The price of the visit is 8.5€; the museum opens at 10 am and closes at 7 pm between Tuesday and Saturday. It opens from 10 am to 2.30 pm on Sunday.

El Camp Nou

On November 29, 1899, Hans Gamper founded Futbol Club Barcelona, along with eleven other football enthusiasts, a sport that was still largely unknown in this part of the world. With a capacity of 98,800 seats, Camp Nou has the largest seat capacity in Europe!  It is located in western of Barcelona, approximately 5km from the city centre, in Arístides Maillol Avenue, in the Les Corts district of Barcelona. You are sure to enjoy a true Camp Nou experience when you go there: it opens at 10 am and closes at 5.30 pm. The price is 18.10€ per person.

 El Born area

El Born is a small, fashionable, but also very authentic village. Glassmakers and designers are located everywhere. Feel free to engage in dark alleys to discover the old Barcelona. It grew in the 13th Century due to a commercial prosperity, El Born (The Ribera) along with the old Gothic Area makes up the old of Barcelona.

Gran Teatre del Liceu

clock November 18, 2009 11:50 by author editor

Opened on April 4, 1847, the Gran Teatre del Liceu is one of the most storied buildings in Barcelona. Located in the middle of Las Ramblas, the theatre was funded by private donors, a sharp contrast to other opera houses in Europe which relied on funding from the monarchy. Reflective of this is the lack of a royal box in the theatre. Host to a diverse array of opera, orchestra and ballet performances throughout the years, this opera house has an even richer history.

The first of two major fires that struck the opera house occurred in 1861, destroying the stage and hall. Repairs were finished one year later, only to again be needed when an anarchist attacked in 1893, again damaging the building. During the 1930s, there was a brief nationalization of the opera house during the economic crises. Finally, the second major fire occurred in 1994 that eventually led to its rebuilding with more modern equipment, yet still fashioned to stay in keeping with the original designs.

As one of the largest opera houses in Europe with 2,292 seats, the time in October when opera season begins is one of the most anticipated times of the year. Opera enthusiasts can look forward this year to performances of works by Verdi, Wagner and Tchaikovsky.

Boadas Cocktails

clock September 20, 2009 13:40 by author editor

It all began in 1933 when Miguel Boadas, a Catalan born in Cuba, wanted to use his experience as a bartender in the mythical “Floridita de La Habana” to bring the art of mixing drinks to Barcelona.

The classic interior of Boadas

In spite of the fact that it's currently an “in” bar in the trendy scene, and that it's located on the corner of Tallers and Las Ramblas (one of the most touristic corners in the city), Boadas Cocteleria is one of the few refuges of authenticity in the center of Barcelona. Intimate and cozy, with a long wooden bar and matching bar stools, its walls filled with paintings and decorative art, the service is handled by a batallion of veteran waiters impeccably dressed in classic smoking jackets.

At first glance it might seem that we've found ourselves in an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. And here is where we notice one of the key features of this bar- it's eclectic and refined clientele. Here mingle the most loyal barflies, locals celebrating special occasions, and foreigners- all smartly dressed. This is due to the throwback bar code employed by the bar, and enforced diligently by its doorman. Don't even think about entering here with shorts on, it's explicitly prohibited. In Boadas the atmosphere is groomed to be cordial and enjoyable, even if it may fill to capacity rather quickly (thanks to its small size). In any case, Cocteleria Boadas merits a visit from any visitor who enjoys to imbibe in a classically classy setting. The cocktails are classic too, and there is one for all tastes: Vodka Collins, Bloody Mary, Gimlet, Rob Roy...

For all of this, Boadas has gained a distinguished reputation en Barcelona, nay, in all of Spain, as one of the best cocktail shops in the country (along with Dry Martini). Its pioneering founder brought the art of the modern cocktail to the city, and for that we are all grateful, and a little bit happier. Enjoy a cool mixed drink and then retire to one of our hot Barcelona apartments and enjoy everything that the city's night life has to offer.

Els 4Gats

clock July 14, 2009 15:11 by author editor

A meal at ‘Els 4Gats’ in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona will transport you to the beginning of Modernistic art and leads you to imagine a young Picasso enjoying evenings with his many contemporaries, discussing matters that transformed into some of the most famous works of art in the 20th Century.

The history is rich with importance and intrigue, starting with its name. ‘Els Quatre Gats’, is Catalan for ‘The Four Cats’, and is a slang term meaning just a few people. It was chosen by Pere Romeu, the creator, in a self-deprecating play on words, as in: “Nobody was at the restaurant but four cats.”

Romeu was a successful performer in the famous cabaret bar ‘Le Chat Noir’ in Paris and he wished to establish a meeting place for him and his conversationalist companions in Barcelona that would resemble this restaurant.  ‘Els 4Gats’ was born in June of 1897 and it quickly became a favorite spot for poets, painters, musicians, and architects, the most famous being Picasso, who held his first public exhibition in the café. However, Romeu was overcome by his idealistic dream of owning the restaurant as a birthplace for artistic ideas rather than as a profitable business, and soon his generosity with bills and tabs forced him to shut it down in 1903, to the dismay of the people of Barcelona.

It was later reopened by another artistic circle and thrived until the Spanish Civil War changed the entire city until the 1970´s where it was once again brought back to life by three businessmen. Now it is a beautifully renovated restaurant with art hung on all the walls and even a menu depicting an original drawing by Picasso for that very purpose. The atmosphere is different than the numerous other cafes in the Gothic Quarter and the food is also of high quality and taste.

‘Els 4Gats’ is tucked away in the Gothic Quarter at Carrer de Montsió 3, just a couple short blocks away from Las Ramblas. The menu features a diverse mix of Catalan cuisine and an extensive wine list, and if you are interested in dining during for lunch, the Menu del Día offers a surprisingly diverse list of two courses and a dessert for a relatively inexpensive price of 12,50€.

La plaça de Cataluña, The Heart of the City

clock July 3, 2009 09:54 by author editor

The Plaza Catalunya, in Catalan Plaça de Catalunya, is the most centered and large plazas in Barcelona. With the remodelization of the Plaza de las Glorias Catalanas and the Plaza Europe, the Plaza Cataluyna will be one of the biggest in Spain.

The plaza has an approximate surface area of five hectoacres and it constitutes the point of union between the old nucleus of the city and the new expansions. This is where important avenues of the city such as the Rambla, the Passeig de Gracia, Rambla de Catalunya, the rounds of University and Sant Pere, street Pelai and Portal del Angel, the great commercial artery of the city and former gate of the walls meet.

The plaza is also very interesting for the numerous sculptures of important artists exposed along its perimeter. Among these emphasized are the Goddess of Josep Clarà and the Shepherd of Pablo Gargallo. There are also pieces from Josep Llimona, Enrique Casanovas, and the monument of Francesc Macía of Josep Maria Subirachs. These are all pieces of work that are more recent.

Whats more is that you can find numerous stores and services all around the exterior of the Plaza, making it an important commercial district. In the center of the Plaza, many times the city will hold concerts, popular celebrations, events or temporary exhibitions. For example, Saint George day, the Catalan day of books and flowers.

For all of these reasons, Plaza Catalunya is considered the heart of the city and deserves a visit from all people visiting Barcelona.

The Gothic Neighborhood

clock July 2, 2009 17:22 by author editor

The Gothic Neighborhood is the heart of Old Barcelona, a medieval city built around the Roman Walls, it is the first site that you must explore after discovering Las Ramblas.

This historic mix of alleys and plazas, mostly for pedestrians, is full of character and enchantment and holds many shops, bars, and restaurants.  The Gothic Neighborhood is located between the famous Ramblas and Ví Laietana, with Plaza Catalunya crossing at the top and the port below. From here, all of the major attractions are easy to reach, for example, the Roman ruins are located below the Museum of the History of the City.

On the southern side of the Gothic Neighborhood, you can find the Plaza Real (Royal Plaza), a plaza surrounded by palm trees, just near the bars and restaurants of Las Ramblas that offers a relaxing site to rest and people-watch during the day. At night the plaza becomes a central point for the nocturnal crowd.

The journey through the Gothic Neighborhood also includes the nearby Museum of the History of the City, a Gothic building relocated to the area in 1931.

If you wish to experience the most authentic part of Barcelona, reserve a Barcelona apartment located in the Gothic Neighborhood or in its surrounding area.
