Barcelona's L’Aquàrium is the most important educational and touristic marine center in the world that focuses on the Mediterranean Sea and the life within it. Featuring 35 tanks, 11,000 animals from more than 450 different species, an 80 meter underwater tunnel, 6 million liters of water, and a massive Oceanarium (the only one in Europe), L’Aquàrium is a reference point for leisure and tourism in Barcelona- with over 14 million people having visited.

Inaugurated on September 8, 1995; the aquarium has used the latest technology to recreate in the most accurate manner possible, all of the diverse underwater environs that are presented. All together L’Aquàrium is a diverse trip through the sea. The Mediterranean is the focus of L’Aquàrium, with the majority of the tanks dedicated to the flora and fauna of this most spectacular sea; but additionally there are tanks that exhibit the breathtaking colors and shapes of tropical waters, the Planeta Aqua exposition, and the educational space Explora!
In each tank there are displays that allow you to learn about each species and what characteristics make it unique. Besides the tanks, visitors may also see two re-creations of protected zones of the Catalan coast, learn about corals and various tropical fauna, as well as "swim with the sharks" by taking a trip through the plexiglass tunnel in the Oceanarium.
