All Saints Day

clock October 28, 2009 11:50 by author editor

Often forgotten in the excitement surrounding Halloween is the day afterwards, November 1st. This is a very important day in Spanish culture, All Saints Day. On this day, people remember their loved ones who have passed away.

Originally a day to remember all the saints of the Catholic Church, especially the martyrs, the day has since expanded to include all the deceased. It has become one of the largest days of celebration in Spain, full of many traditions. Cemeteries are adorned with flowers in remembrance and masses are offered there as well. Large family meals are typical, and afterwards roasted chestnuts and sweet potatoes are consumed. The chestnut vender on the street is definitely something to look out for!

Another key tradition is Spain´s longest running play, Don Juan Tenorio, written by José Zorilla. In the play, the protagonist don Juan is depicted in the struggle between salvation and damnation, with the pivotal scene taking place in a cemetery, making it very appropriate for this day.

Plaça Sant Jaume

clock October 27, 2009 12:32 by author editor

Plaza de Sant Jaume has been located at the civic heart of Barcelona even before the city was known by that name. Dating back to the period of Roman occupation, this area was the Roman forum, the square center where the two main roads of the city intersected where one could find all commercial and political activity. Traces of the Roman history still lay nearby in Plaza del Angel where the ruins of the walls stand as a vestige of a time long ago.

Today, Plaza de Sant Jaume is home to Barcelona´s political institutions. Two magnificent buildings stand directly across the square facing one another, the town hall and the autonomous government palace (Palau de la Generalitat).  Here at the palace, the seat of the Government of Catalonia and the Presidency of the Generalitat can be found.

What can one expect in this civic square? It is located right in the middle of the Gothic Neighborhood and there are always people there. During national holidays and celebrations, this area remains a focal point of activities. This is a must see area, as the entire city seems to radiate out from this plaza.

Mount Tibidabo

clock October 21, 2009 12:23 by author editor

One of Barcelona´s most attractive sites, visible throughout all the city is Mount Tibidabo. If you are standing in the streets, simply look northward and you will see this looming mountain. Particularly spectacular is the image at night, where it seems to illuminate the dark skies.

Mount Tibidabo is the highest peak in the Serra de Collserola mountain range, the strip that separates Barcelona from the plains to the north. Many activities can be found at the summit including Barcelona´s oldest amusement park, in operation for over a century, as well as a gorgeous, two-tiered Catholic church, the Temple of Sagrat Cor. This church is visible throughout the entire city, in large part to the imposing statue on top of Jesus with his arms outstretched.

A great part about a trip to the peak of Tibidabo is the trip itself. Accessible by bus and car, the far more entertaining route is to take a tram up the winding hill to the base of the mountain, passing through a gorgeous neighborhood. Once at the base, there is a funicular railway that will take you to the top. Upon arrival, you will immediately be taken aback by the scenic views the high altitude offers. All of Barcelona and the extending Mediterranean waters are at the beckon of your eyes.  For an even more magnificent view, there is a lift that takes you to the base of the statue on top of the church, 540 meters above the ground.

So if you are looking for a complete experience, a trip to Mount Tibidabo is just the thing. All aspects, from the ascent up to the activities on top of the mountain make for a day of fun. So visit us at ComeToBarcelona and reserve an apartment now!

Picasso Museum

clock October 20, 2009 12:36 by author editor

Here in Barcelona we are extremely fortunate to be home to one of the most extensive collections of Picasso artwork in the world.  Barcelona is home to the Museu Picasso de Barcelona (Picasso Museum of Barcelona).  The museum, which opened in 1963 at the request of Pablo´s best friend Jaume Sabartés, houses more than 3,800 original works.  Picasso arrived in the city in 1894 at the tender age of thirteen.  At the time he arrived he was already an up and coming artist, and Barcelona provided young Pablo with a space to learn and improve throughout his teenage years.  The museum best portrays these training years of Picasso´s life; we could say it is practically exhaustive up through Picasso´s well known Blue Period.

¨Secret Images. Picasso and Japanese Erotic Prints.¨ arrives at the Barcelona museum on November 5th and will be here through February 14th. The exhibition will, for the first time, bring together a series of erotic Japanese prints that were once part of Picasso´s own collection.  Picasso himself often depicted erotic scenes, especially at the start of his career (1900-1908) and at the end of his career (1964-1972).  It will be most interesting to see the foreign influences at the exhibition and ponder what impact these works may have had on Pablo Picasso´s career.

The Picasso museum is open six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 am-8 pm.  Find an apartment close to the museum!

Palau de la Música Catalana

clock October 19, 2009 12:58 by author editor

Built in the modernista style between 1905 and 1908 at the behest of a Catalan choral society, the Palau de la Música Catalana has become the musical heart of Barcelona. Originally constructed as part of the widespread Catalan renaissance of the 19th Century, this concert hall is one of the most unique in all of Europe.

Located in La Ribera, the Palau de la Música Catalana stands out for the ornate decorations that grace the exterior of the building. From the outside, intricate stained glass patterns and elaborate sculptures adorn the building, including busts of the famous composers Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven. However, the outside embellishments are merely a preview of the astonishing interior. The concert hall, which holds an audience of about 2,200, hails back to cathedrals of old as it is illuminated during the day solely by natural light.

Many of the world´s greatest singers, choirs, composers and orchestras have enhanced the prestige of the building with their performances. It has also been home to many important musical premieres. Musical presentations such as symphonies, jazz and traditional Catalan songs can be enjoyed in the concert hall. Currently, you can find many of the concerts that are part of the 41st annual Jazz Festival of Barcelona.

Visit us at ComeToBarcelona so that after a great musical experience you can spend a relaxing evening in one of our apartments!

clock October 15, 2009 13:36 by author editor

Hungry for some Catalan Cuisine? Well, we have the tour for you!

In Spain dinner is often served quite late in the evening, usually between 9pm-11pm.  In order to pass the time between work and dinner time many Spaniards go to tapas bars.  ´What is a tapas bar?´ you may ask.  Tapas bars offer a variety of beers and wines as well as ¨tapas¨, the Spanish word for appetizers or snacks.  The tapas come in different forms, cold or warm, meat-filled or vegetarian.  What a better way to engage in Spanish culture than to eat when the Spaniards eat and eat what the Spaniards eat?

On the Tapas Evening Walking Tour of Barcelona you will be introduced to Catalan Gastronomy and culture.  The tour takes place in well-known places within Barcelona with stops on La rambla at La Boqueria and in the Gothic Quarter at a Basque Bar.  A English-speaking guide will lead you to the best cusine throughout the city, while adding information about the history of Catalan culture and architecture.  Book your tour today and allow us to help you find a beautiful apartment close to La Rambla and Barcelona´s most well-known tourist sites!
